Hundreds of activists are on their way to the blockaded Gaza strip via a "flotilla" of boats carrying humanitarian and reconstruction supplies, which are badly lacking in the impoverished Palestinian territory.
Israel has promised to intercept the good-willed boats and arrest and deport the activists. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has exerted great effort in the past few days to convince onlookers to this confrontation on the high seas that the activists carrying humanitarian goods are terrorist sympathizers, and that everything is just fine and dandy in the Gaza Strip. The ministry has portrayed Israel (the country enforcing the blockade of Gaza's ports) as a benevolent victim, who despite the threat from Gaza's Hamas government is still caring for the civilian population.
There comes a point when an oppressive regime's propaganda crosses a threshold from mere lies to utter lunacy so extreme, in fact, that objective onlookers find it almost comical. This point came yesterday when the Government Press Office disseminated a link to a Gaza restaurant which appears to be luxurious. So what Israel is essentially saying is: "There you have it. There is a website for a restaurant with cloth napkins in Gaza. How can there be any problems?"
The reality is, of course, that the situation in Gaza is very dire. A slew of reports from human rights organizations attest to the hardships faced by most Palestinians in Gaza. In the densely populated strip where 80 percent of the population are refugees, a similar percentage relies on international aid organizations for daily sustenance. That number was only ten percent a decade ago. That's how bad things have become. Malnutrition in children has reached ten percent and critical medicines are not available, according to the World Health Organization.
But no one is starving to death in Gaza--at least not suddenly. A tunnel industry has evolved and become the main supplier for most goods. That's all part of the plan. Israel seeks to squeeze the strip to the point of near catastrophe, bad enough to make people suffer, but just short of having to take responsibility for it. It's a form of torture kind of like water-boarding under the Bush administration: the objective is to bring the subject to the edge and break his will, but not kill him (lest they be charged with murder). But just because Gaza's civilian population has managed to keep its collective head above water doesn't mean things should be this way.
Like life in most prisons, if you "know a guy," anything is available for a price. Generators, for example, are in high demand because of the shortages of electricity. The shortages are due to the destruction of Gaza's only power plant in 2006 by Israeli jets. Since then, Israel has never permitted the full reconstruction of the power plant, forcing perpetual dependence of Gaza on Israel and Egypt, who take an eye-dropper approach to supplying Gaza with electricity. But even though generators smuggled through Gaza's tunnels provide some light, there is also a dark and often unheard downside that comes with them: explosions and fires. Several reports in the past few years of civilians being killed or maimed from overworked and exploding generators have become common. These are just some of the siege-related causalities we do not hear about.
The 10,000 tons of supplies aboard the Gaza aid ships are a drop in the bucket for what Gaza really needs. Israel's spokesmen have pointed out that they have permitted the entry of supplies in the past and argued that the aid boats are unnecessary. The reality is that aid which Israel does permit into Gaza is purchased by Palestinians, vetted and often rejected or held up for months. Israel has calculated the precise minimum necessary caloric intake for Palestinians in Gaza, and has often rejected things like pasta, lentils and coffee. So it's easy to understand why international humanitarian organizations and the activists aboard the aid boats are not about to trust the welfare of Gaza's civilians to Israel's benevolence.
The aid boats will have a far greater impact, however, than the 10,000 tons of aid they are bringing to Gaza. The aid boats compel us to have this discussion, a discussion that Israel desperately wants to avoid at a time when its international reputation has never been lower.
Hundreds of unarmed civilians carrying humanitarian aid are approaching a blockaded piece of land where 1.5 million civilians suffer from a life of uncertainty and despair, and Israel is going to stop them. While much of the focus on the Israeli-Palestinian issue has been on the settlements, the failed peace process and the long-awaited restart of talks about talks, Gaza has been forgotten. To their credit, the few hundred non-violent activists-turned-sailors have found a way to maximize their power as individuals to force one of the world's most powerful regimes into a corner. Whether the boats make it to Gaza or not, this is a tremendous victory for civil society in international affairs.
Headlines and stories covering this confrontation at sea will shift the focus back to Gaza, even if only for a few hours. For Israel, Gaza is the tortured and famished step-child it locks in the basement when visitors arrive, and the activists on these boats seek to expose what Israel is doing in the strip: imposing a draconian siege to collectively punish civilians for political aims.

Israel if afraid of joining the human race.
Israel if afraid of joining the human race as that will unravel its ugly, oppressive and brutal Zionism.
That is more truth than Jews can handle.

It is great to see this kind of straight piece in an American publication, perhaps there is hope for the ME.
We have a log jam. You can not get a settlement while the status quo is not only overwhelmingly in one sides favour but, additionally, is not static. Israel gobbling up the West Bank while pinning the Palestinians in to an ever smaller, and less viable, bit of real estate is what passes for a status quo. The root of the problem is in America not the ME. Unless the US cuts of the flow of arms and political cover there is no incentive for change, at at least from the Israeli side. The US needs to allow the nations of the world to apply a crippling sanctions regime against Israel. The US should be helping to run the blockade into Gaza so the prisoners can get food and medicines, to begin with, and then building materials to repair the destruction the IDF caused. By any metric applied anywhere else in the world Israel can not be counted as one of the 'good guys'. Iran is a better global citizen, in fact North Korea probably is.
You can actually watch live coverage from the ships:
http://www.ihh.org.tr/filistin/en/
Most of what I heard is in Turkish with some Arabic and English spoken in the background.
"Israel gobbling up the West Bank while pinning the Palestinians in to an ever smaller, and less viable, bit of real estate is what passes for a status quo."
Here's why propaganda wins over reason and fact.
A) Israel IS NOT "gobbling up the West Bank". In fact, Israel has not ADDED any land in the West Bank in years short of some adjacent land to present settlements appropriated from the withdrawing sea.
B) There's nothing "less viable" in terms of the land that is in debate.
C) UN Res. 242 states that the two sides will have to sit down and define borders, but the Pals do not want to do this - but Netanyahu has asked THREE TIMES now for peace talks... No takers.
"Unless the US cuts of the flow of arms and political cover there is no incentive for change, at at least from the Israeli side."
A common stupid belief built upon revenge and not actual logical thoughts and conclusions.
IF the US withdraws from Israel, Israel will have no one to contain them and they will react out of feeling put against a wall, and no animal reacts well in that case - look at how the Palestinians are reacting... Imagine Israel reacting like that not caring a whit for international opinion and not reacting to any international pressure. Is that really what you want? Wanna think that one through a bit more, perhaps?
"US needs to allow the nations of the world to apply a crippling sanctions regime against Israel."
HA! Yes. But not Hamas and their mortars/rockets, not Lebanon and Hizbollah's attacks, not Iran and their funding and arming of those that attack Israel... ONLY Israel.
Gee, I wonder if this person is partisan!?
"By any metric applied anywhere else in the world Israel can not be counted as one of the 'good guys'."
Except that they are the ONLY country in the whole region that is a functioning democracy, with lawful freedoms for ALL citizens... Wanna try to march in Egypt or Syria or Lebanon or Iran or Saudi Arabia or Gaza? I dare you. Want to speak out against these governments? I dare you. If you're a woman, want to wear what you want and marry whom you want or not? I dare you.
"Iran is a better global citizen, in fact North Korea probably is."
That is the most stupid comment yet. Wow. I wish that I saw that comment first off, because I'd not have bothered to respond.
Swanadee I have read some of your other posts and realise it is probably not worth trying to reason with you but I will try.
A) Is it, or is it not, true that there are currently about 500,000 Israelis living in the West Bank and that much of the road infrastructure has been has been put off limits to Palestinians and that the barrier has encroached into the West Bank land in many places.
B) If the above is true then are the 500,000 balanced on the head of a pin or are they living on West Bank. If they take up space then they are leaving less space for the Palestinians. Unless I see evidence that Israelis are returning settlement land to the Palestinians and stopping all new settlements I take nothing back.
C) I will not argue UN Security Council resolutions with you as the US has made a mockery of them in its protection of Israel. The US has become far the largest user of the veto and the vast majority have been in stopping dozens of resolution against Israeli excesses. As to Netanyahu if he would like to sit down without preconditions under the auspices of a neutral arbitrator – by which I mean not the USA or Iran – then I think he may find some takers.
Arguing that you are only behaving like a school yard bully with first strike capability now, because the US is holding you back, and would be much worse if unconstrained does not do much to help your case.
The US aids Israel in the Billions and Hamas gets maybe $100 million from Iran. This claim of them being armed in any way that may be a serious danger to Israel is ludicrous. In operation caste lead the IDF killed over a thousand civilians for the loss of 9 soldiers and of that 9 the IDF killed 4 which leaves a grand total of 5 IDF dead not killed by their own side which I presume died due to the enormous military build-up supplied by Iran.
I never said you were not a function democracy it is just very sad that you have used your votes consistently empower governments that perpetrate one atrocity after another. I count Lebanon 2006, caste lead and the treatment of the civilians in Gaza as the worst crimes the first two require war crimes prosecutions. I would not like to live in Saudia Arabia, Iran or Egypt but none of them send their troops on killing sprees into neighbouring territories. OK the Saudis have been in Yemen but not on an Israeli scale.
Iran is not a better global citizen than Israel? I would say it was. What has Iran done which is anyway comparable to the two items I have said require Israel to stand trial for war crimes? Have they massacred civilians in an internment camp or invaded another country and littered civilian areas with antipersonnel mines? I do not like North Korea anymore than you do but apart from their latest foray into attacking ships in international waters they too are better neighbours Israel. There are plenty of states that treat their own citizens badly but not many apart from Israel, the US and UK that go around attacking other countries. I am British and count my own country as among the worst global citizens as it is an arms supplier to countries not fit to have a gun and it seems incapable of not joining in wars of aggression which have no moral or legal basis.
The author conveniently forgot to mention EGYPT
which is also a key participant in the blockade. Blame Israel for all of the woes of Gaza, but never mind that Israel is working hand in hand with the arab muslim government of Egypt as well. Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit, consistently speaks about Egypt participating in the blockade and Egypt's efforts at destroying the tunnels. Egypt has also begun building an underground steel wall under the border to prevent palestinian smuggling. But of course, let us blame Israel for everything.
Next, lets ask why there is a blockade. The people of Gaza freely and fairly elected Hamas to govern them. Fair enough. Hamas, as its foreign policy, kidnapped and Israeli soldier and attempts to kidnap more. It plans attacks in Egyptian Sinai. It also uses Egyptian Sinai to smuggle in goods, weapons, drugs, and even prostitutes into the Gaza strip and if possible on to other locations.
Hamas, also as part of its foreign policy, sends rockets into Israel. This occurred on nearly a daily basis. And, if Hamas was not doing it, then it was also giving the green light to other organizations to do it, such as the Popular Resistance Committee (PRC).
When supplies were getting through, such as cement, Hamas was using it to build military bunkers and tunnels, ala Hezbollah style.
Hamas and Israel are essentially in a prolonged state of war. Hamas in its charter calls for the destruction of Israel. It states, "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will OBLITERATE it, just as it obliterated others before it." It fires rockets, launches attacks, and incites the population through violent media, like the famous violent "mickey mouse" show they used. In war, blockades happen.
Finally, lets think how the blockade could end. Hamas could return Cpl. Shalit, the Israeli hostage it has been holding for about four years now...sounds reasonable. Hamas could remove the part of its charter that calls for the destruction of Israel....sounds reasonable. Hamas could also stop firing missiles from Gaza into Israel...also a reasonable proposition. Hamas could also use cement, gasoline, and other supplies to help the people, rather than to build bunkers for its armed wing and to fuel up its military vehicles and the vehicles of its Al Quds forces members....quite reasonable. Finally, Hamas could also stop the crime, violence, terrorism, and smuggling which is creating problems and instability in Egypt / Sinai.... quite reasonable as well.
Keep in mind too, that all those reasonable actions would result in a quid pro quo from Israel and Egypt.
So, before we start pointing the finger at Israel, lets see who else has their hand in this problem. Egypt, yes. But principally the Palestinians themselves who select their government, which made no secret of its actions and desires before and after the elections, and the Hamas government itself, which refuses to change its violent, detrimental and dangerous policies. It's a lot easier to cry to the world (Hamas / Palestinians) than to take responsibility and make hard choices.
Freeda and the consiracy theories
OK, so let me get this straight. The Jews / Israel control the US. The U.S. then controls Egypt. So, basically Israel controls Egypt. So, any country the U.S. has sway over, is basically controlled by Israel/Jews or can be. Freeda did you hear about the aliens in your backyard? Do you have your tin foil hat on? Just watch out for those Elders of Zion.....
"We also know the blockade started after Israel pressed the US to press egypt to keep it up." No, the blockade started when Hamas took over Gaza and started using it as a rocket launching pad to fire missile into Israel.
Your idea that the Egyptians are simply toys for the Americans and Israelis is insulting. It borders on racism, a belief that these poor Egyptian Arabs cannot make a rational decision for themselves.
Before becoming elected Shalit was kidnapped by Hamas affiliates. He is now in Hamas control. Hamas is the ruling power. Holding him is part of a policy. Where is the connection not being made Freeda? Hamas and its Islamic affiliates have launched attacks from Gaza, some being with the aim to kidnap more Israeli soldiers or civilians. There have been warnings put out by the Egyptians that Hamas and its agents want to kidnap Israeli tourists in Sinai. This is a plan of action by a government....what we call a policy.
"Israel, as part of its foreign policy, kills/tortures/kidnaps/bombs/shoots ppl in gaza daily." Really? Daily? Wow, that's a lot of hard work. I didn't hear of the big bad Israelis killing someone in Gaza today or any of their torturing. Maybe its the Israeli controlled media hiding it. They must even control Al Jazeera, because no record of a murder-a-day in their online newspaper, too. By the way, where were you when Hamas was pushing Fatah members off of high rises and dragging their bodies through the streets of Gaza City? Oddly, you were very quiet.
Oh, and where were you when Hamas's leader, Mahmoud Al-Zahar announced his policy on homosexuals, saying: "Are these [allowing for same-sex marriage] the laws for which the Palestinian street is waiting? For us to give rights to homosexuals and to lesbians, a minority of perverts and the mentally and morally sick?" Hmm, you were also very quiet. You are just not quiet when it comes to those big bad Jews!!!!
Freeda, I love this intelligent quote of yours: "If hamas didnt shoot rockets into israel, then one of FATAH'S AFFILIATES (israel's supposed negociating partner) would shoot rockets." First of all, how would you know that? What magical "affiliate" of Fatah are we talking about in this hypothetical world you live in? How about I argue that, the U.S. should have invaded Iraq, because if the U.S. didn't someone else would have. Same logic...or lack thereof.
"Israel could remove the "jews-only" cause in its charter." Ummm, Israel doesn't have a charter. It also doesn't have a Constitution, just like Great Britain. It has a Declaration of Independence, but nowhere in that document does it have a "jews only clause." I suggest you read it, before you slander a country by making things up. And, if you would learn, about 30% of Israeli citizens are NOT Jewish. Yep, bedouins, arabs, muslims, christians, circassians, armenians, and druze all are citizens. Some even serve in the army. Israel also let in thousands of Russians who are not considered Jews. It also admitted 84 Bosnian Muslim refugees to its country during the Balkans war. And, it made full citizens of hundreds of Vietnames "boat people" who were fleeing communist persecution after North Vietnam overran South Vietnam.
I really wish you learned things like this before you typed a whole bunch of nonsense.
Finally, I love this little doozy of a quote. It was bound to happen...."If israel wanted to end the war, it could. It doesnt, because it wants gaza to be a concentration camp, like Auschwitz."
Yay!!!!! Another Nazi comparison!!! Are you sure Glen Beck is not writing on here, because no one other than him, and Palestinian supporters, tend to use the ad hominem attack of "Nazi" more. You could have also used the words "Stalinist" that would have been a good ad hominem attack, and it would have changed things up. You gotta have some variance in your hate-filled screeds once in a while.
Lets just be clear. Gaza is nothing like Auschwitz. Gaza is summer camp compared to Auschwitz. But just to indulge in your fantasy... when the Palestinians took a "vacation in Egypt" they engaged "In a shopping spree that was both festive and frenzied, Gazans cleared out stores in an Egyptian border town, buying up everything from TV sets to soft drinks to cigarettes. " Hmmm, I don't remember the Jews having in TV sets, soft drinks or cigarettes in Auschwitz. Oh, a few Palestinians even bought new Japanese made motorcycles and brought them into Gaza. Were there cool motorbikes that the Jews got to ride around on in your Auschwitz fantasy? Maybe they had some off-road racing or X-Sport competitions? Was it hosted by T.J. Lavin?
Well, Freeda, I gave you a lot more attention than anyone in their right mind should have. Find a husband if you can (doubtful), and keep yourself busy. Critical thinking clearly is not a skill you possess.
And i remembered Egypt is the second largest recipient of US aid, after Israel.
Isnt iraq the largest recipient of us aid, followed by afghanistan
Vilk, stop deflecting, the problem is ISRAEL
Vilk, stop deflecting, the problem is ISRAEL.
How many Israelis have been killed by rockets ? 3 in 5 years.
http://www.jpost.com/Israel/Article.aspx?id=175599
Rocket attacks from Gaza have almost ceased. A small number of rockets have been fired, although splinter groups and not Hamas itself are believed to be behind the attacks.
Hamas isn't going to go away. It was a democratically elected body. And Israel only has itself to blame, you are ignoring the fact that Israel helped Hamas rise in the 1980s to defeat the PLO and then when the PLO ceased being effective advocates for its people, it embraced it and sidelined Hamas.
Zionism is the ethnic cleansing of all Palestinians from ‘Jewish’ land. You can’t accuse Hamas while ignoring all the right wingers, like Lieberman, in Israel who call for the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians. You’re a hypocrite and not very good one at that.
Various Arab nations, Fatah, and even Hamas have indicated a willingness to recognize Israel along the 1967 borders. Israel has repeated turned down or sabotaged efforts at peace. Given Israel's overwhelming military advantage, the constant complaining about Arabs wanting to wipe Israel off the map lacks credibility.
And shalit? What about the THOUSANDS of Palestinains who are detained - at night - taken from their homes, beaten, killed, and tortured. You think, we, or the world, ought to be upset about one Israeli soldier. You want shalit back? End the occupation, get your illegal settler terrorists out of the West Bank, stop your incursions into Gaza and SETTLE FOR PEACE.
Israel is the problem.
Vilk, go back to the hasbara institute
Your rantings are pure lunacy. And stop insulting anyone who disagrees with you. The facts are there and you can't change them.
Keep trying put no one is buying your BS. Go back to the Hasbara institute in your capital, Tel Aviv and have a huddle with your other bloggers because what your doing is not working.
Israel is the problem. Always has been, always will be.
The arabs were killing Jews long before 1948 and 1967
Anyone remember the Hebron massacre of 1929? Israel wasn't in existence. The Jews in Hebron weren't settlers. They had never and were there long before the arab hordes invaded the Levant and long before the time of Mohammed. After that the arabs ethnically cleansed Hebron. They also ethnically cleansed the Etzion bloc of villages. There was also the Tsfat massacre of Jews in 1928. Again, these were religious non-zionist jews living there from biblical times, long before arabs invaded the Levant. And, the arabs killed them.
Here is what Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian president had to say as recent as two weeks ago:
Abbas criticized Hamas, saying that "they are hoarding weapons."
"There was also the Tsfat massacre of Jews in 1928. Again, these were religious non-zionist jews living there from biblical times, long before arabs invaded the Levant."
Wow! They were there from biblical times all the way up to 1928 when they were massacred? LMAO
Why is the death of innocent people funny?
You are really sick.
"Why is the death of innocent people funny?
You are really sick."
And you are really thick. Read it again, carefully, and keep reading it until you understand what I was saying.
Ethnic cleansing, apartheid and occupation are wrong
and indefensible. Only the most virulent racist tendencies drive and thrive in this environment. I read what the unrestrained id of Israel writes, it is the carbon copy of the opposition's most vocal leaders. But what you do is you empower those violent leaders because without them the population knows that it will have 48 hours to collect all they can and run away before the bulldozers roll through the alleyway.
And, I meant the whole thing.
To this though - "Hamas and Israel are essentially in a prolonged state of war." Yes, that's a point that not many understand. This is not just Israel beating up some poor little kids - this is war. And, in war - bad things happen, which is why these groups should not encourage and cause bad things to happen. Don't want people to die on boats? Then do what the navy says and go to land. Don't want people to die in Gaza? Then don't attack Israel. Don't want people to die in Gaza because they can't get to a hospital? Then don't use ambulances to ferry explosives and terrorists.
There's a cause and effect relationship here that goes beyond petty bias and bigotry. People here don't want logic and reason, they want Israel to PAY, and this has been going on before the '20s when there were the first anti-Jewish pogroms in this regoin that lead us to this situation.
J Thomas - Idiotic comparison. Stop with the ad hominem attacks
Lets get past the Nazi comparison. It's a foolish one to make. It's the same as when Obama haters make pictures of him as a nazi or when people would call Bush a Nazi. It's an extreme and unjust comparison to make. Unless you are Glen Beck in disguise, please grow up.
Moving past the childish extreme, which was more or less an ad hominem attack, you failed to respond to anything I stated.
1) Egypt and Israel are doing the blockade. The U.S. has at times supported it and at times not wanted it. Both these countries are coordinating the blockade together for shared and mutual interests, regardless of the U.S. or any other country for that matter. Israel is enforcing a naval blockade. Egypt is enforcing a tunnel blockade with its steel wall. And, both Israel and Egypt are stationing soldiers at checkpoints/border crossings and using soldiers to destroy tunnels.
2) This blockade done by Israel and Egypt is not done just to be "mean." These two governments aren't spending millions of dollars, wasting millions of man hours, and putting lives at risk just to harass the Palestinians. Both of them have security concerns. This is regardless of what you, the EU or the US thinks. And for some reason, I put more faith in the Egyptian and Israeli intelligence services, armies, and political leaders than I do your opinion or this authors (who apparently is so smart, that he doesn't even know a whole other country is doing the blockade as well).
Take this instance for example, which supposedly really made President Mubarak angry: "Several hundred protesters gathered in the city of Rafah began throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails at Egyptian security forces across the border, who responded with gunfire, witnesses said. In the midst of the chaos, a Palestinian sniper shot and killed the Egyptian guard, officials said." - LA TIMES
Or how about this incident: Manee Singueanphon, 30, from Thailand, was killed Thursday while working in Israel, by a rocket fired from the Hamas-controlled Palestinian territory of Gaza. - NY TIMES
3) The Palestinians can end the blockade by Israel and Egypt with a few simple steps. (a) Stop calling for violence and the destruction of Israel (b) stop firing rockets into Israel (c) stop using supplies that do get through like fuel, cement, and metal rebar for military purposes and instead use them to build homes and buildings (d) return one kidnapped Israeli soldier and stop attempting to kidnap more. Finally, if the Hamas government refuses to do these simple changes in policy, then the Palestinian people should not ELECT Hamas. We vote for a political party based on its policies and actions. Kidnapings, missiles, squandering resources, and incitement to violence are its policies/actions. If they don't like it, elect Fatah and watch the standard of living rise as it has in the West Bank (the people in the West Bank by the way do not want anything to do with their poor, uneducated, and violent "cousins" in Gaza, incidentally).
So J Thomas, if you want to use ad hominem attacks, go ahead. I heard the Nazis used to do that a lot too. Hmm, maybe you are acting like N...A...Z...I.... - joke.
If ever there was a case to be made that lying & complete mutilation of truth is the cornerstone of Jewishism, VILKSSWEDEN, you are the poster child. I can say with reasonable certainty that Jews run away from truth much the same way that roaches flee to the cracks in the wall when you turn the lights on. The Khazar wannabe Jews (95% of those who call themselves "Jews") consider light and truth as anti-semetic. Their rantings are NEVER factual and one can deduce the content of the their ranting posts by reading the opening words of the first sentence.
Meditant - AntiSemite and failure to respond to a single fact.
I am glad anti-semites like you come out of the woodwork through articles like this. First, you haven't responded to a single point. Somehow, we should all take your word that everything I say is false. You seem to predicate that on the assumption I am Jewish, despite my name. Even if I were Jewish, it wouldn't make my statements false nor would it change the fact that you haven't refuted a single one.
Whether or not someone is a Khazar does not determine religion. Second, the Khazar theory has been disproved by genetic studies. The only people still pushing that theory are the Palestinians and the Nazi organization "Stormfront." Everyone else has gotten with the times and follows something called "genetics," which show that Jews from all over the world carry genetics that link them to the Middle East / Levant.
Again, thank you for showing your conspiratorial, anti-semitic, and non-intellectual colors. If you chose to post next time, please actually put information and facts rather than just telling someone they are "wrong."
Vilk, go back to the hasbara institute

Israel is the problem. Always has been, always will be.
"Imagine if this... Imagine if that.. Now imagine if that." Ok, lets get back to reality. I urge you to read a book on Nazis and the Third Reich. Think it would open your eyes to what happened.
How about you imagine someone making a ludicrous claim (insert your name) actually reading a book and stop making insane comparisons for shock value.
You are no different than the people painting Obama with the mini-moustache and swastika or the people who called Bush and Cheney nazis.
because Israel isn't systematically killing and enslaving populations like the Nazis. It's not so hard to comprehend that.
Israel and Palestinians are at war. Its not the same as Nazi Germany exterminating 15 million Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, and others.
In addition there is no forced labor like the Nazis. Israel lets humanitarian aide into Gaza despite being shot at, infiltration attacks, and their soldier being kidnapped.
Is this clear for you? Now, please stop with your idiotic, childish, and silly comparisons.
J Thomas for someone critcising me on facts, you have yet to
provide any. I've only heard you ranting about "imagining" things. I could always make the same idiotic comparisons about Nazis to the Palestinians, whose leader Haj Amin Al- Hussaini actually worked with the Nazis and helped raise a muslim SS division, the Hanjar division.
I could make a claim that you are like the Nazis, using idiotic lies over and over again until you think people will believe you. The Nazis also made outlandish claims, as do you.
Finally, please do not respond to my posts if you can't back up what you say with facts.
What a joke you are. Is it not pretty well obvious that you and your ilk are paid by that filthy regime to go around the web and post your lies? Spare me the b.s. Actually, spare us the b.s. All, without exception, of your patently false contentions are exactly the same boiler plate lies spread all over the net by Jews and Jews ONLY. It is the contentions of barbarians thinking they could buy their way into twisting logic. All the rules of humanity applies to everyone else except the Jews - at least in your psychopathic heads. Screaming "anti-semite" doesn't cut it like it used to. In fact, folks like you are the worst anti-semites of them all. (see how easy it is to call someone "anti-semite." Yaaaaaawwwwnnn. Let's pretend we don't all know that Palestinians are real Semites and that your ilk are not. Your ilk did not come from Palestine or the surrounding areas - not yesterday, not 2000 years ago, not ever. You are fake. Everything about your existence and the tall tales that rule your hideous lives are lies - plain outright lies. Even the few Israeli archeologists who dare to speak the truth (self-hating Jews your ilk calls them) confirms, you're an invention like most of the rest of your program of pure evil. The arrogance is overwhelming. You're right and the rest of humanity is wrong. I wonder who taught the Nazis their propaganda skills. They were mere bumbling amateurs compared to you folks. Anyway, have a nice day at work. Earn your salary. Continue posting as much b.s. as the bull plops down in on the ground.

1. BOMBS fall as CHILDREN go to school. Time is running out in Gaza and mass starvation looms as Gaza\'s skies are further darkened with threats of an Israeli military incursion. As a journalist, peace activist, and one of the hundreds of thousands of Gazans who are being collectively punished by Israel, I urge those who read this to appeal their governments to hold Israel accountable to international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention, article 33 of which forbids the collective punishment of a civilian population. Ohh let's not forget the use of FAKE British and Australian passports to MURDER plaestinian targets!

Civilian deaths have escalated dramatically in recent years since the zionists developed their obsession with the Palestinian birth-rate,and children are often the target. There is only a small fine for killing a Palestinian in cold blood. It's based on a weapons charge, not murder. To understand the genocidal character of this vile regime, one need only glance at the responses from zionists; at least half advocate or at least imply approval of the killing of non-jews.

NOT THE FULL LIST - Palestinians have home made rockets, Assoult rifles, knives, suicide bombers in the ansence of tanks and fighter jets and Toy Guns. "For 12-year-old Mujahed Al Samadi, life ended quickly with a bullet to his chest from an IDF sniper who mistook his toy gun for the real thing"

We've heard of the expression, "have your cake and eat it too." The Jewish mob has designed the ultimate bullsh?#ting machine. They want the privilege of torturing, stealing, lying, kidnapping, mass-murdering, gassing, humiliating, mutilating Palestinians IN PEACE with no outside interference. Moreover, they want the rest of the world to join them in their brutalization and crimes against humanity of Palestinians. They get a hissy fit for everyone who dares to see through their flimsy and porous web upon web of pure and unadulterated lies. The icing (the sludge) on the cake is that we're all supposed spend endless breath condemning condemn Hitler & the Nazis for having done what Jews are doing today. You can't have it both ways. The Nazi excuse for committing wholesale barbarity was screaming "Jewish terrorism." Substitute the word "Jewish" for "Palestinian" and this is what is happening today with one exception: Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto were better off than Palestinians in Gaza today. If there is even an ounce of humanity within the framework of Jewishism, its adherents would hang their heads in shame. Apparently, these creatures have no shame as they demonstrate to the world every day. Stepping on someone's toe without apologizing is par for the course under its ugly tenets - especially when the victim is a lowly goy (cattle).
again, no facts used in your angry screed. Just some base comparison to the Holocaust. Learn history, learn about WWII, and learn about the current situation. Please stop polluting this board with idiotic screams of "fire" and disgusting Holocaust comparisons.
Velks, who are you to try to control this public forum?
Frankly, some of your arguments are outdated (for example quoting Hamas original charter that refuses to recognize Israel even though time and time again they have stated they will recognize Israel along the 1967 borders in a peace treaty). You are either ignorant of facts like this or you willfully ignore them because such facts do not support your arguments. Noone here is calling for you stop spouting outdated arguments are they? Who appointed you the FP public forum police?
And for the love of (insert holy figure here) stop it with the antisemitism card. It doesn't work anymore we all know better. Once and for all, criticism of Israel is not antisemitism no matter how much you wish it was.
Stephen Harper, Former Canadian Prime Minister said....
"I guess my fear is what I see happening in some circles is (an) anti-Israeli sentiment, really just as a thinly disguised veil for good old-fashioned anti-Semitism, which I think is completely unacceptable."
Again, when you criticize the Jewish state as opposed to any other state, and hold it to standards that you do not hold other states to, it's highly suspect you have deeper, more sinister motives. Moreover, outrageous comparisons, blood libels, Jewish conspiracy theories, and willful ignorance of facts seems to show there are some strange motivations going on here.
I'm not interested in supplying you with the obvious. Facts? Since when has cold hard facts change the opinions of cold, hard Jews? Have a nice day and make sure your dirty employers in Tel Aviv pay you well for posting here.
Transtrist:
Gaza is not an Islamist Palestinian state it is an open air prison.
Hamas is dedicated to the destruction of the ‘Zionist Entity’ as it does not believe that the victorious powers at the end of WW2 had the right to give the land in which they lived to a religious group even if they had suffered appalling persecution. If they deserved compensation then it should have been on German soil. I am also in favour of the destruction of the ‘Zionist Entity’ as I believe in a democratic, secular, one state solution with constitutional protection of religious minorities, including Jews & Christians.
There is a complete absence of trust between the two sides and as deep a gulf in power. The Palestinians have little and what they have is being eaten away daily. They are in no doubt that if they unilaterally return Shalit and stop rocket & bomb attacks what will happen is their lot will not substantially change but Israel will continue to have control over them, their land, their water etc.
The accepting Israel bit is not an option, why should it be as it is exactly what they want to negotiate about. Whose lands is it? Is the question to be resolved, why would anyone concede that before negotiations begin.
Vilkssweden
True the author did not bring up Egypt’s complicity in the siege of Gaza but then again the article was about a ship coming from the sea with humanitarian aid and Israel stopping it so it is hard to see why it should have. Which leads me to ad hominem attacks.
These are attacks on the writer rather than the substance of their post so a comparison between Gaza and Auschwitz would not be an ad hominem attack (Warsaw ghetto would have been a closer analogy as Gaza is a concentration camp rather than a death camp – operation caste lead not withstanding). To help clear up the meaning here are a couple of examples of ad hominem attacks.
“Freeda, I love this intelligent quote of yours: "If hamas didnt shoot rockets into israel, then one of FATAH'S AFFILIATES (israel's supposed negociating partner) would shoot rockets." First of all, how would you know that? What magical "affiliate" of Fatah are we talking about in this hypothetical world you live in?”
Here the author is calling in to question the writers intelligence although the substance is also addressed, after a fashion. The ‘Fatah affiliate’ would be the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades who are probably responsible for most of the rocket launches in the cease fire period pre caste lead. Hamas actively tried to stop firing in exchange for more open boarders they were fairly successful but there was not much of an opening of boarders.
This is a more classical example in which the author just insults the poster without any real reference to the text.
“Well, Freeda, I gave you a lot more attention than anyone in their right mind should have. Find a husband if you can (doubtful), and keep yourself busy. Critical thinking clearly is not a skill you possess.”
I hope that helps clear that definition up.
Stop the comparisons to the Holocaust
Again, the idiotic comparisons to the Holocaust. The Jews in the Warsaw ghettos were being "liquidated." That means that they were being systematically starved to death, worked to death, and deported to death camps.
What about history can you not understand? This is not happening in Gaza. The Gazan Palestinians, unlike the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto, are a HOSTILE government at war with Israel. They are supported by Syria and Iran. They import Hezbollah military trainers, anti-aircraft missiles, and anti-tank/rpg rockets.
Unlike in Warsaw, NO Palestinian has died of malnutrition or starvation. I don't think there is always fillet minion for dinner but they aren't starving to death. There is NO rampant disease in Gaza like in Warsaw. In fact, Israel has allowed Palestinians from Gaza medical treatment in it's hospitals. In 2009 alone, 10,544 patients and their companions left the Gaza Strip for medical treatment in Israel. The Israeli group Hadassah donates $3 million annually to help Palestinians get medical treatment.
Finally, no Palestinian is being forced into labor, executed on the streets, or sent to death camps like Jews were in the Warsaw Ghetto.
So please, stop with the Holocaust comparisons. It shows a total ignorance on your part. I beg you to read about history and learn before you make base comparisons, distort history, and tarnish the true suffering of people.
Vilk, go back to you hasbara institute
Your rantings are pure lunacy. And stop insulting anyone who disagrees with you. The facts are there and you can't change them.
Keep trying put no one is buying your BS. Go back to the Hasbara institute in your capital, Tel Aviv and have a huddle with your other bloggers because what your doing is not working.
Israel is the problem. Always has been, always will be.
thanks for the argument minus any facts. Again, claiming someone is a "Hasbara" agent is not an effective argument. And if you read my name, you know I am not Israeli and Tel Aviv is not "my capital."
So, your best defense against my arguments is telling me "to go away." Nice one.
Thanks! Love to see my name in print. Now go away, your boring and offer nothing to the debate.
Betz, I offer nothing? You have posted the same
rant like 3 times already. And your only screed is that I am somehow a "Hasbara" agent from Tel Aviv. Wow, you offer a lot. I can go back to "tel aviv" when you go back under the rock you crawled out from under.
Again some cheap Arab propoganda, shame on you
The only reason this cruise is taking place is to make Israel look bad and to get it on television, there are a hundred trucks with food and medical supplies that go into the Gaza strip everyday, and Israel does not limit that type of supplies, so please lets not distort the facts and make it seem as if there is no food in Gaza and the only reason people in Gaza are surviving is because of the tunnels simply not true. Your so called Egyptian "brothers" are right there you have a boarder with them so go there and try to pull some of that funny stuff see what happens to you and your boats, why would Israel be responsible for Gaza, when the leadership of Gaza promised to fight it to the last soldier, why is there no rebellion against hamas?
All these "peace activists" should go to Saudi Arabia and demonstrate for women's rights maybe gay rights, maybe against the killings in Sudan, the oppression of Kurds in turkey, these funny turks think they can play both sides, they are real human rights leaders, THeir leader is going closer to Iran and Islam, that is the country who is supposed to be a Nato bridge between East and west.
Alll the supplies these people want to bring in could be brought in if they leave it in An Israeli port and let Israel inspect it? that is simply the case if there nothing besides food aND SUPPLIES THERE IS NO REASON THAT ISRAEL WOULD NOT LET IT IN, BUT OF COURSE THEY REFUSED, THEY WANT THE ALTERCATION ON TELEVISION, BECAUSE IT IS NORE IMPORTANT TO MAKE ISRAEL LOOK BAD RATHER THAN TO ACTUALLY SEND THE SUPPLIES TO GAZA, THAT IS THE EXTREME LEFT ANTI ISRAEL MIND FOR YOU.
Israel is afraid of joining the human race.
Jew Israel is truly afraid of joining the human race as that will unravel its ugly, oppressive and brutal Zionism.
That is more truth than Jews can handle.
Equal rights for everybody. Equal rights for all the Palestinians in Greater Palestine.
Openning a small section of Route 443 to Palestinians, in Illegally Occupied Palestine by the Jew, leading to no place is just another cheap publicity stunt by Jews of Israel.
Jew only roads in Illegally Occupied Palestine by the Jew is very very racist.
http://lalqila.wordpress.com/
Lal Qila this has nothing to do with the article
you just love to bash Israel with silly rants. I think you are either a bot that posts moronic, poorly written rants on Israel every day or a semi-literate child.
Either way, if you want to know about the roads at least have your facts straight: In the wake of the scandal over opening Route 443 to enemy traffic, the IDF revealed that it has spent $40 million to build the roads for Palestinians.
No Jews are allowed on those roads, which connect Arab villages to Ramallah.
This is how Israeli ‘apartheid’ works: Jews pay for Palestinian-only roads and for Israeli roads which the Palestinians use freely.
Vilk go back to the hasbara institute

Jews are afraid of joining the human race? Give me an example of how the arabs with their billions of dollers from oil money have made the world a better place for humanity? what have they donated to humanity besides Jihad and Mosques and the zero? With all their graet fortune nothing, Israel and jews at least have made contributions to medicine, science, technology, gay rights women's rights etc.... You arabs only speak of humanity and democracy when it suits your needs, go complain to Saudi Arabia and Iran about humanity.
Open roads to women in saudi arabia mr. humanity, the road used to be open untill it was used for terror attacks to kill civilians. They are digging their own holes and than complaining about israeli brutality. Illegaly occupied palestine? Says who? You and arabs that it is illegally occupied palestine, that was occupied by jordan and egypt for a long time, and the palestinians had no urge to create anything for all those years.
Decided to attack Israel and now complain about how "their" land was taken. Only time in history when the looser of the war demands land back when they were the attckers. No country has had sovereinty over that land for years since the turks so Israel can do whatever iot likes with the land, but will be willing to make concessions for true peace, and we seen before that we keep offering and you guys cant even make a counter offer. America first? – Never for U.S. media or politicians?
By mike | Published: May 18, 2010
I keep getting e-mail from a man named David Horowitz who wants me to give money to his movement to stop what he calls “President Obama’s war on Israel.” The notes are much like the earlier one I wrote about here from the Republicans’ congressional leader John Boehner asking for money to help his party protect Israel against Obama.
Now what in the world could these two men be talking about?
Obama is completely owned by the Israelis, just as his predecessors were. U.S. taxpayers continue to see their money channeled to the war-wanting Israeli theocracy, even as the number of jobless and homeless increase domestically. Our soldier-children are still on the hook to die for Israel — without a declaration of war — if Netanyahu divines that his holy book tells him that Israel’s God-given deed for all of Palestine needs protecting by attacking Iran. (NB: Odd isn’t it, how Washington routinely uses the separation-of-church-and-state tenet to attack U.S. Christians, but believes it is inapplicable when the U.S. federal government financially supports or militarily defends overseas theocracies like Israel and Saudi Arabia?)
In addition, Obama has an Israeli military veteran as his chief of staff, and almost certainly as a conduit for making sure his friends in that military are up-to-date on U.S.-collected intelligence. And 76 U.S. senators sent a letter to Secretary of State Clinton in April, 2010 — after Netanyahu publicly humiliated Obama and Biden — urging unqualified support for Israel because it is a “reliable ally and friend and has helped advance American interests.” This explains a lot about America’s problems if 76 senators believe Israel’s suborning U.S. citizens to spy on their country; selling U.S. high-technology to U.S. enemies; and corrupting the U.S. political system — at least to the extent of 76 AIPAC-owned U.S. senators – are the traits of a “reliable ally and friend.”
“Obama’s war on Israel” must meet a new-age definition of war that I have yet to learn. For all intents and purposes, Obama is an Israeli operative, as were his predecessors. Indeed, in this one area of policy U.S. presidents are very close to being agents of a foreign power, more interested in protecting Israel’s interests and territorial ambitions than in defending America.
Anyway, the war that more concerns me at the moment is the looming “Obama/McCain, Democratic/Republican war on the lives of America’s soldier-children and economy in the name of helping Israel destroy Iran.” That’s a long name for a war, and even an acronym would be too big a mouthful. If the war occurs, maybe we can just call it by its proper name: “TREASON.”
If the picture above is of one of the actual boats...
then this episode is quite insightful.
A Turkish aid vessel being turned away by the Israeli Navy from delivering supplies to the Palestinians.
This has the makings of an international incident.
This would not be the first time
Remember when the Israel gov't held Cynthia Mckinney? Nothing ever happens though, no international incident, no follow up news coverage. It just gets swept under the rug.
I suppose Vilks will tell us it's antisemitic to let humanitarian missions into Gaza.
No its just a media ploy and you fall for it.
The goods can cross at a border crossing where they can be inspected. Why? Because concrerte and iron are being used for making military bunkers and tunnels rather than houses. Why? Because anti-aircraft missiles and anti-tank rockets are being smuggled into gaza. Why? Because rather than have a concern for its people, Hamas is focused on bringing in military hardware or misusing any and all construction / fuel supplies.
criticize one nation, the Jewish nation (or nation with the Jewish majority, however you wish to say it) and ignore all others. When someone spouts something about universal values or claims to be for human rights yet ignores everyone else except the Jewish country, it says something about them and deeper more sinister motives.
Thus, when several states do the same thing, but only the Jewish state is blamed, it is anti-Semitic.
When you make unfounded allegations against Israel, such as Nazi comparisons, its antisemitic. Especially when you are silent on real genocide going on in Darfur.
When you deny Jews a homeland its antisemitic. Especially since nearly everyone here is on land that once belonged to someone else at sometime. I urge the Americans to move out of their homes and give up their property. At least the Jews had a starting point in the Levant, where as you Americans originated all over the world.
Mark Strauss of foreign policy, this publication, has described this virulent anti-zionism / anti-Israel behavior as "the medieval image of the 'Christ-killing' Jew resurrected." Using Zionism and Israel is a nice cover for deeper feelings.
With all due respect, what is this nonsense? you say if one criticizes Israel and no other country then it is antisemitic. So if I criticize Israel on this thread, and you have zero information on me otherwise than what you see on this particular thread, then you can conclude I am an antisemite? This is the height of stupidity and it is played out over and over and over again on most threads that deal with Israel.

This poor, tired, played out accusation has one foot in the grave and I will be quite happy when it is buried forever. Because let me tell you right here: I think Jews are among the finest people on the planet. The majority of people I work with are Jewish. I acknowledge with pleasure the great achievements of the Jewish people. I acknowledge with pleasure their contributions to humanity. I have many many Jewish friends (living in New York this isn't uncommon with a heavy Jewish population). I THINK THE WORLD OF THEM. On the other hand, I think the GOVERNMENT (I repeat GOVERNMENT, not people) of Israel sucks. I would not be surprised if many people that criticize Israel on this thread and others agree with me wholeheartedly.
What does it matter what I think of other countries???? Yay for Sweden, Switzerland, Italy; nay for Saudi Arabia and North Korea. Where does that leave us?
